Saving the World 🧙‍♀ (Can it be done?)

Then there’s the desire to “save the world”, a common refrain in movies and literature. In many ways I find this a beautiful reflection of society’s widening embrace in who we care about saving. In old movies we wanted to save our tribe, town, or country; now we want to save the whole multiverse. It symbolically shows an increasing awareness of wholeness and interconnection.

Yet I can’t help but think “saving the world” is also a projection of our (hidden) desire to save ourselves. Eg: The world looks broken because we’re projecting our own brokenness. Or projecting helps us avoid our fears of death and meaninglessness. Yet most of these projections are built on shoddy chains of logic. Facing them with relatefulness, they fall apart.
