Climate Vision 🌎
Jan 09, 2025
I believe that how we frame things has a lot to do with the outcomes we get. Many of the climate change discussions are framed in ways that result in apathy. Let’s think of it more like getting to the moon: We’re going to do this.
How quickly can we? How can we reward, guide, and incentivize it? What are the specifics? Metrics? Timelines? How can we embrace the whole developmental spectrum in this quest, eg: (Amber) If we’re ethnocentric American, can we beat the Russians and Chinese? If we're anyone else, can we beat the Americans? (Orange) How many jobs can we create? (Green) What kind of international cooperation and peace will this create?
What “this” are we going to do? We’re going to:
- Create nearly free energy in a sustainable way
- Protect the biodiversity currently alive and allow it to evolve in a natural eco-systemic way that isn’t so wildly disproportionately influenced by human activity
- Protect 80%+ of the Earth’s land for environmental stewardship (positive trends, interactive map, currently somewhere around 12-17%)
- Create healthier air, water, and soil for humans and other animals
- Work out water rights for all humans
- Produce and distribute great food for everyone on the planet, sustainably and ethically
- Restore 1 billion acres of forest
idk what else? Can these goals unite us across ideological divides? Are they less apathy-producing?
I’m not an expert in any of these fields. I have no idea what I’m talking about, and I’m not claiming that “Climate Vision” is more important than other current challenges—AI, war, personal survival, societal, etc. There are more things to care about than any one person has time, energy, or capacity to address. Luckily who we are is much more than individual. I don’t know if it’s guaranteed, and I believe being truly intimate with the risks and challenges increases our chances of success. But I also believe our civilization has enough capacity to do all of it. We’re going to do it!
