Micro-transformation: Loving yourself from 20 years in the future

This came up in a recent client session, and I thought it’d be lovely to share.

When you think of the struggles you went through when you were twenty years younger, you probably feel a lot of love and compassion for yourself. Even if you did things that you thought were “wrong” or “unlovable” at the time, you now are able to love yourself and see the innocence and pain that drove your actions.

Feeling this, can you imagine that the twenty years older and wiser you might be looking back and loving you now, in the place you feel most unlovable? Let’s try it: (1) Feel somewhere you’re currently struggling. (2) Imagine your 20 years older self loving you now, from 20 years in the future.

After feeling this, you might want to get carried away—40 years wiser you is loving the 20 years wiser you that’s loving you now… 100 years wiser grandchildren looking back at their grandparent (you)... 10,000 generations down the line looking back and loving the challenges and mistakes of this whole civilization we’re in… and suddenly we’re approximating my idea of God’s unconditional love.

Now we can expand the scope even farther, and feel how we are already the manifestation of that love: Look back and love the algae that oxygenated our atmosphere despite it destroying almost all life on Earth. We are the current manifestation of that unconditional future love.

The long view of love: From self-compassion to cosmic acceptance.

With love, Jordan
