What if organizations had a lifespan? 🌄

If we think of organizations as living systems, what does it look like for them to die with dignity and grace? For example, if the purpose is no longer needed, perhaps the organization helps place every employee in new purposes within their own lives or other organizations, sells all of its assets and distributes them?
Anyone else thinking this way? What does it look like to build this understanding in at the beginning? How would we know what the lifespan is—a few years, a few decades, a century? What determines it?
