Book I'm Loving: The Cloud of Unknowing ✝️ 🌫️
Aug 29, 2024
An anonymous Christian mystic in the 14th century wrote this beautiful book called The Cloud of Unknowing, which teaches contemplative prayer: A powerful practice that modern (non-Christian) spiritual seekers would undoubtedly call meditation. The author counsels readers to forget everything—"even meditating on God’s love must be put down"—and rest in the empty, pure, longing for God. "For your soul to be healthy, it most needs a blind stirring of love for God alone."
I love the conversational vernacular, I love the gentle spirit, I love the states I get in reading it, and I love connecting to the centuries of fellow practitioners who have been guided by this book. Perhaps even more, I appreciate seeing concepts, states, and practices that I personally came to mostly through Eastern mysticism in their own, homegrown expressions from Christianity, my roots, and a large part of the roots of Western culture.
With love, Jordan
