Integrative Politics: Texans for Reasonable Solutions 🏙️
Feb 02, 2023
How do you apply this idea of focusing on the "shared future" to someplace extremely divisive, like politics? Texans for Reasonable Solutions is the best example I know. The aim of their first big effort is “tackling housing shortages”, which drive up housing prices, which push out the workforce, which lowers the quality of life for all.
I find this beautiful because it dodges partisanship to aim at workable improvements that benefit all. Shared future—despite concerns about housing typically being seen as a "liberal" thing and deregulation that allows more development typically seen as a "conservative" thing. I know how easy it is to get caught in the drama (not just the above story) but it seems so silly from the higher vantage point of shared interests. Who wants crazy high property taxes? Who wants more barriers for permits and fewer ADUs? Sometimes conflict is creative, but I keep looking for ways, like this org, to skip the adversarialness via shared vision.
With love, Jordan
